"Squad compilation takes top priority"
On June 1st, Jörg Schmadtke took over as the new Sporting director at VfL Wolfsburg. On Wednesday afternoon, the 54-year-old was officially presented at a press conference and, together with the Green-Whites Supervisory Board chairman Frank Witter, took questions from the gathered press representatives. It quickly became clear that, after a seven-month break, Schmadtke is eager to get going. Suitably, the new man also had some news in relation to the Wolves summer planning.
"Happy to be here"
"I am very happy to be here. I am aware of the significance of this task, but I am well rested, as I had plenty of time to take care of other things, including myself," stated the new Sporting director. After two seasons, at the end of which VfL salvaged their top-flight status through the relegation play-offs, Schmadtke emphasised: "Squad compilation takes top priority now. We need to put together a balanced and stable squad that is capable of playing a decent 2018/2019 campaign." Witter added: "There is plenty of work to be done here. However, in Jörg Schmadtke, we have exactly the right man to get things done where they are needed."
"Install a system of values"
The Supervisory Board chairman took a look back on the past and insisted that major goals for the coming season will not be taken into consideration: "No team could possibly be more thankful to still be playing in the Bundesliga than VfL Wolfsburg, after two seasons which were anything other than good. I am not about to go blowing any trumpets after the last two years we’ve had." Schmadtke, was not making any wild announcements either, for fear of finding himself chasing after them: "Within the team we will install a system of values, which everyone can orient towards and stick to. 'Arbeit, Fußball, Leidenschaft' (Work, Football, Passion) are three such values, as are our behaviour towards one another, communication honesty and willingness to work. We intend to exemplify, but also demand those things."
Preparations in Wolfsburg
In the few days since taking the reins as Sporting director, Schmadtke has already addressed the subject of a pre-season training camp. "The way things are looking right now, we will be staying in Wolfsburg. We have the best possible working conditions and will undertake our preparations in Wolfsburg. It is possible that we could leave the city for the odd friendly.
