Jerome Roussillon joins VfL
The defender has signed a four-year contract until 30 June 2022 after passing his medical on Monday. Rousillon, who will wear the number 15 shirt at the Volkswagen Arena, is the Green-Whites’ fifth summer signing following the arrivals of Felix Klaus, Daniel Ginczek, Pavao Pervan and Wout Weghorst. The 25-year-old trained with his new teammates for the first time on Monday afternoon.
A “consistent performer” with “blistering pace”
“We’ve always stressed that we wanted to bring someone in at left-back and are pleased that we could persuade Jerome Roussillon to join VfL Wolfsburg,” said VfL CEO Jörg Schmadtke. “He provides another option for the left side of defence. He developed into a consistent performer at Montpellier and now wants to take the next step of his career abroad.”
“Jerome Roussillon is an interesting player because he’s experienced but also still has room for improvement,” added head coach Bruno Labbadia. “He has blistering pace and can also provide an attacking threat from the left-hand side.”
117 Ligue 1 appearances
Roussillon, who came through the youth ranks at the Clairefontaine academy, joined Montpellier from FC Sochaux in January 2015 but was immediately loaned back to his former club until the end of the campaign. A Frenchman with Guadeloupean roots, Roussillon went on to register seven goals and seven assists in 87 league outings for Montpellier, who he helped to a tenth-place finish last term. He made 117 Ligue 1 appearances in total, having clocked up another 30 league outings while at Sochaux.
“To move abroad now is a huge challenge for me, but one I’m willing to accept,” said Roussillon. “I’m ready to take this next step and will try to settle into my new surroundings as quickly as possible. I’m very excited about Wolfsburg and the Bundesliga.”
