So far as the table was concerned going into the game, the pressure was clearly on the Wolves, who had taken just one points from their last three games, whilst visitors FC Ingolstadt 04 had won each of their last three games – meaning a further victory would see them surpass VfL in the table. Driven on by the Green-White fateful though, the Wolves put in an impressive performance and deservedly secured a 3-0 win in a vitally important match in the race to avoid relegation. Obviously, the mood in the opposing camps after the game could hardly have been different.
The coaches' reactions to the game
Andries Jonker: "We kept our cool after the heavy defeat to Schalke, we analysed the game thoroughly and drew the necessary conclusions. We quickly switched our focus to the Ingolstadt game, chalked out a plan and worked with the utmost in concentration and focus throughout the week. Defensively we played very well, although in the first-half both sides were poor. In the second-half we were much better on the attack and in the end, it was a deserved win for us."
Maik Walpurgis: "I am not at all satisfied with our display. That’s not how I know my team! Today we were far too passive, we never got a grip on the game and were far too erratic on the attack. Playing deep is what made our game so strong of late but that didn’t work for us at all today. As was the case with the first two goals we conceded, we lost possession far too easily and put ourselves under pressure. Defensively we did quite well for 45 minutes, but going forward, we never showed what we are capable of. That considered, it was a justified defeat."
