Harder makes the century
There were two wins and one defeat for VfL’s female internationals in World Cup qualifiers on Thursday and Friday. Whilst Claudia Neto and Portugal suffered a 0-3 loss in Italy, Nilla Fischer, with Sweden, (4-0 against Croatia) and Pernille Harder, with Denmark, (5-1 in the Ukraine) celebrated clear victories. Harder was on target in her 100th international outing.
Fischer and Harder neck-and-neck
In World Cup qualifying Group 4, after five games, Sweden and Denmark fill the top two places. On Thursday, the side including VfL captain Fischer notched up an emphatic 4-0 (1-0) home win over bottom side Croatia. The Lady-Wolves defender was in action over the distance. The following evening, Harder and the Danes secured a 5-1 (2-0) victory away to third placed Ukraine, to extend their cushion over the hosts to five points. In her 100th international outing, the VfL striker and top-scorer in the Allianz Frauen-Bundesliga, who was also involved over the full ninety minutes, once again got her name on the score-sheet (33‘).
No chance for Neto
The Portuguese national team were left without a chance, as they crumbled to a 0-3 (0-2) defeat to table-toppers Italy. With captain Claudia Neto playing for the duration, the Italians romped home with goals from Cristiana Girelli (4’), Cecilia Salvai (13’) and Barbara Bonansea (90’). With four points form five games, the Portuguese are third in the group, but quite some distance away from second-placed Belgium. On Tuesday, Portugal face Romania, who are currently level on points. During the week, Hungary, with the Green-Whites Zsanett Jakabfi, were also in international action, playing out a score-less test-friendly draw with Greece.
